West Ham United’s 34-year-old center back James Collins has bagged 50 caps with Wales. But now, he is no longer a top choice and is behind other Wales defenders, such as Ashley Williams and James Chester.
Lately, Collins will only be summoned to the Wales national team in the event of an injury crisis. However, manager Chris Coleman hopes not to enter Collins in his squad.
“It’s a shame, because I am very happy to work with him,” said Coleman as reported by BBC Sport.
“He’s different from a modern professional – he must be a player I put into the dressing room and I can remember, not a player I just hired. But he’s incredible, “added Coleman.
“She wants to spend more time trying and lengthening her domestic career, she also has a small child. He already said, if we really have trouble he will cancel retirement – and he has given us that choice, “he said.
Coleman and Collins did not always work. The Wales boss once said, Collins was ‘wrong’ for denying that he refused to perform for international duty in 2013.
Collins denied Coleman’s claim that the former Cardiff City defender rejected the chance to join the Welsh national team and called it a ‘late call’. Colemen then called Collins back before the game against Serbia in September last year.
However, the two returned and tried to clear things up afterwards. Since then, Collins continues to be a regular member of the Wales squad.
